Everything I Loved This Week

A List

When I was a kid going out for breakfast was a common weekend adventure. My mother loved IHOP and the Original Pancake House. We usually went on Saturdays and then Sundays were spent eating homemade breakfast. My love of eating breakfast out continued well into my first marriage too. We act at a local diner every Sunday, it was where I first fell in love with eggs benedict and discovered croissant french toast.

After our divorce, I stopped eating breakfast out. Not because it reminded me of him but more because I was broke and breakfast was a meal that I could easily make at home with cheap ingredients. Eggs are cheap, even if you spring for the most expensive variety. A side of toast a diner is the same cost as a loaf of bread at the market and flour, milk, and eggs are what is used to make pancakes and I almost always have those things on hand.

Fast forward 15 years later and I cannot remember the last time I went to a restaurant for breakfast. Brunch and breakfast while traveling do not count. Brunch is different than eating breakfast out.

I woke up this morning craving fluffy pancakes. Not just any pancakes - buttermilk pancakes. Buttermilk is some kind of wonderful. It’s an ingredient that I always have on hand and if I do not have it, we do not make pancakes. Pancakes can set the tone for the whole day - it is indulgent and comforting. I made a fresh batch and paired it with a blueberry compote. It’s going to be a good day!

Here is my offering to you, since I cannot offer you pancakes.

My favorite buttermilk pancake recipe is from Alison Roman. I have tried a few over the years and this one never disappoints. It is simple, fluffy, and not overly sweet. I do admit that we often add vanilla and a cup of chocolate chips to the batter. You only live once.

What is it about Frances McDormand? The first time she caught my eye was in Fargo, which to this day, is still one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. McDormand rarely grants interviews. This fact made this Vogue interview that much more special.

The Queen’s Gambit came out at a great moment in quarantine for us. I have been watching the same TV shows on repeat for months and had yet to find something that caught my eye… I enjoyed this video from Netflix that takes you behind the scenes of making the series.

West Wing leaves Netflix on Christmas Eve and from what I have read will move to HBOMax in the New Year. I love this series and enjoyed this article encouraging leaders to lead like Leo.

J.Crew is having ANOTHER 60% sale! I have my eye on this sweater!

We launched the 5th issue of our magazine this week. I am really proud of it and everything that our team did to get it to market!

NYT Year in Pictures is out and as always… Gorgeous images show us a year that started with so much hope… the beginning of a new decade, an election, and more but ended with a pandemic and a recession.

The finale of the four part documentary, The Reagans aired last weekend and it was a good one. I was born during Reagan’s presidency and so everything I know about the family was second hand. I enjoyed this history lesson on not only his presidency but his road to the White House.

I plan to prepare this trifle for Christmas Eve dessert.

Have a great week!
